Reference Laboratory
Rare Blood Donor Registry - With over 70,000 donors tested for 17 different blood types, the Blood Center has one of the largest registries of extensively typed blood donors in the nation and provides blood throughout the country when rare bloods or special combination types are needed.
Compatibility Testing - Making sure that transfusion recipients receive compatible blood is another critical aspect of blood safety, especially for people with rare blood types. Transfusion of incompatible blood can cause a severe or even fatal reaction. Predicting and avoiding these reactions are special missions of the Blood Center's Reference Laboratory. With outstanding expertise in blood compatibility testing, this laboratory provides medical institutions with rare blood for patients, determines the cause of transfusion reactions and provides compatible blood.
Frozen Rare Blood Depository - Many rare units are stored in the frozen state for up to ten years. Approximately 300 rare units are stored at all times.
