Hawthorne Fire Co. #5 Hosts Blood Drive in Honor of Borough Firefighter Nov. 2, 2015

HAWTHORNE, NJ - Community Blood Services and Hawthorne Fire Company #5 are holding a blood and platelet drive in the borough on November 2 in honor of George Lodder, a borough firefighter.
Lodder, who previously served as captain and lieutenant in his company and is currently its fire safety officer, beat lung cancer last year but, unfortunately, was diagnosed again this year with cancer throughout his stomach. Lodder, who is also an EMT and fire instructor for Passaic County, has needed blood and platelets during treatments for his cancer at Holy Name Medical Center.
The drive was scheduled because Lodder wants to help other patients in need of blood or platelet transfusions. It will be held Monday, Nov. 2 from 2 to 9 p.m. at the firehouse, 828 Lafayette Ave.
Anyone interested in donating can call 201-251-3703 to schedule an appointment or click here to schedule online. Whole blood donors must be healthy, 17-75 years of age (16 and 17 years old with parental permission) and weigh at least 110 pounds. Walk ins are also welcome but an appointment is needed to donate platelets.
Community Blood Services provides lifesaving blood and blood products to patients in more than 20 hospitals in New Jersey and New York, including Holy Name.
