John Theurer Cancer Center and Advocacy Groups Join Cancer Survivor to Raise Awareness of Blood Cancers and Bone Marrow Donor Drive September 18
Hackensack, NJ John Theurer Cancer Center, along with Gildas Club Northern New Jersey, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Community Blood Services, have partnered with Norward Harris, a three-year survivor of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), to host Making the Match: The VALUE of Being a Donor on September 18, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The event, which will help raise awareness about blood cancers and the national Be The Match donor registry, will be held at the office of Gildas Club Northern New Jersey, 575 Main Street in Hackensack.
The program will feature presentations from former John Theurer Cancer Center patient, Norward Harris, as well as Dr. Michele L. Donato, medical director, Blood and Marrow Collection Facility, John Theurer Cancer Center, Hackensack University Medical Center.
Norward will share stories about his battle with cancer to help empower survivors in their communities. Dr. Donato, who has been a clinician and researcher in bone marrow and stem cell transplantation for more than 15 years, will discuss the science and process of blood cancers and transplants.
Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with blood cancers and many of them do not survive unless they find a matched donor for a bone marrow or stem cell transplantation, said Dr. Donato. I am honored to be partnering with Norward, Gildas Club Northern New Jersey Jersey, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Community Blood Services to raise awareness about this very important cause.
I am extremely thankful to the donor who helped save my life, as well as the many doctors, nurses and caregivers at John Theurer Cancer Center for their excellent care, said Norward Harris. I want the Making the Match event to engage more people in becoming committed to helping and empowering patients.
