Join Community Blood Services MVP (Most Valuable Plasma) Club for AB Male Plasma Donors Today! August 2011
Did you know that if you are a male donor with type AB blood you are the universal plasma donor? Every day Community Blood Services needs male AB donors to donate lifesaving plasma for patients in community hospitals.
If you are a male donor with Type AB blood YOU can make a huge difference in the lives of patients who need lifesaving plasma transfusions in our community hospitals by becoming a plasma donor, said Karen Ferriday, director of community affairs at Community Blood Services.
The MVP (Most Valuable Plasma) Donor Club is a new lifesaving program at Community Blood Services that encourages regular donations from Type AB male donors to ensure plasma is always available to the more than 25 hospitals it serves in New Jersey and New York. Donors can donate at the Paramus or Lincoln Park donor centers in New Jersey or at the New Windsor Donor Center in New York.
"Type AB blood represents only 4% of the population which is why we need regular and constant donations from these volunteer donors," Ferriday said. "Because Type AB plasma is 'universal,' it can be transfused to any patient, especially burn victims and trauma patients, regardless of their blood type." She explained that plasma is the liquid portion of the blood containing critical clotting factors. It is used to treat patients with certain bleeding disorders and for plasma exchanges.
MVP donors can donate plasma as often as every 30 days through an automated donation process. Its safe, easy and usually only takes a little longer than donating whole blood, Ferriday said.
MVP donor club members are asked to commit to at least THREE lifesaving donations a year.
- MVP Donor T-shirt
- MVP sticker each time you donate that identifies you as a special donor
- Recognition certificate and ceremony at the end of the year
