February 21 & 22, 2011

Anyone who successfully donates blood or platelets at Community Blood Services' New Jersey or New York donor centers on Monday or Tuesday, February 21 or 22, will receive a complimentary restaurant gift card good at an area restaurant.

The gift card can be used at Red Lobster, Olive Garden or the Longhorn Restaurant.

In New Jersey, donors can donate at the Paramus donor center, 970 Linwood Avenue West, on Monday, Feb. 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Tuesday, Feb. 22 from12 noon to 7:30 p.m. Or they can donate at the Lincoln Park Donor Center, 63 Beaverbrook Road, Suite 304, on Tuesday, Feb. 22 from 1 to 6:30 p.m.

New York donors can donate at the New Windsor Donor Center, 575 Hudson Valley Avenue, Suite 206, on Tuesday, Feb. 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Donors can click here to make an appointment to donate or call toll free 1-866-228-1500. Walk-ins are welcome to donate whole blood but an appointment is needed to donate platelets at the New Jersey centers. Only whole blood donations are currently collected at the New Windsor center.

"We need many more volunteer blood donors at our donor centers," according to Karen Ferriday, community affairs director at Community Blood Services. Ferriday noted the blood supply still needs to be replenished following eight snowstorms since late December. There is less than a one-day supply of blood on the shelves and all blood types are needed, she added.

Community Blood Services is a not-for-profit organization that provides blood and blood products to more than 30 hospitals in New Jersey and New York.

Whole blood donors must be 17-75 years old (16 years old with parental permission) and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors also receive complimentary health screenings, including screenings for cholesterol and glucose.
