Community Blood Services & Price Chopper Supermarkets Partner to help Save Lives

November 7 & 20, 2010

NEW YORK Community Blood Services of NY/NJ is partnering with Price Chopper Supermarkets to offer community members free health screenings on its mobile WeCare health and wellness center as a joint commitment to their communitys health.

This partnership is a perfect fit, said Dr. Ronald Walsh, medical director at Community Blood Services. Price Chopper and Community Blood Services share the same mission providing services that will help keep the community healthy.

With the added support of Senator Bill Larkin the health screenings program will provide a tremendous benefit to the community, said Dr. Walsh. Senator Larkin, whose legislative efforts helped fund the wellness mobile vehicle, has been instrumental in supporting the WeCare program.

The valuable health screenings, which will include non-fasting total cholesterol, non-fasting glucose, hemoglobin, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature, are being offered in hopes of helping community members maintain their good health and to identify abnormal results early enough to improve the outcome of any disease.

Participants will also be educated about the importance of becoming blood donors and, at some targeted drives, joining The HLA bone marrow Registry at Community Blood Services as potential stem cell donors to help critically ill patients around the world.

Price Chopper is proud to partner with Community Blood Services to provide this free service, said Stephanie VanDerwerker, Price Chopper community relations specialist. This partnership works in concert with Price Choppers ongoing mission to promote health and wellness in all of our communities.

Upcoming drives at Price Chopper locations will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on:

  • Sunday, November 7, 142 State Highway 94, Warwick
  • Saturday, November 20, (Vails Gate) 115 Temple Hill Road, New Windsor

Committed to the health of its community, Price Choppers online Healthy U program offers the latest information on nutrition and diet, and allows visitors to share their comments on nutrition issues with other Price Chopper shoppers and to get answers to their nutrition questions. Through pricechopper.com, visitors are encouraged to eat smart, get moving, and live well by making healthy food choices and enjoy an active lifestyle.

The WeCare Health & Wellness Mobile Center at Community Blood Services is dedicated to providing much-needed health screenings and health care education to our communities, particularly to community members who may be underserved by the health care system or have no insurance.
