About
Community Blood Services |
|
Community
Blood Services has saved lives by providing blood
and blood products to nearby hospitals since 1953. CBS
collects, tests and processes donations at its headquarters
in Paramus, NJ, as well as through mobile drives throughout
Northern New Jersey and southern New York. We also have
sites in some of the hospitals we serve and at our two
branch offices located in Goshen, NY and Lincoln Park,
NJ. The organization provides blood and blood products
to 37 hospitals throughout the area, including Morris,
Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Sussex, Union and Hudson Counties
in New Jersey, Rockland, Albany and Orange Counties in
New York State, and a few hospitals in New York City. |
Our efforts
thus save thousands of lives of accident victims, cancer
patients, people with leukemia or lymphoma, surgical
patients, and those with sickle-cell anemia. Each month,
we needs to process approximately 3,500 units of red
blood cells, plus 600 units of platelets (used for
surgery, cancer patients, and hemophilia) and plasma
(used for burn patients and accident victims) in order
to meet patients’ needs. |
The HLA
Registry, a division of Community Blood Services, has more than 225,000
donors who are willing to donate their bone marrow
to victims of leukemia, lymphoma or other devastating
diseases who need transplants. Our Elie Katz Umbilical
Cord Blood Program is one of only 31 centers throughout
the United States that provides stem cells from the
umbilical cords of new-born babies for use by the general
public. |

Does It Work? |

First Sudoku Tournament in New Jersey |
For those who love figuring out the numbers to solve a Sudoku puzzle, you’ll have your chance to show how good you are in New Jersey’s first-ever tournament for this latest craze in puzzling. |
There will be two divisions: |
Junior: Ages 12 through 17 (must have parental permission) |
Adult: Ages 18 and over |
|
Sudoku fans will be challenged by at least four puzzles prepared by puzzle guru Will Shortz, puzzle editor of The New York Times. Compete for a first prize of $100, trophies for the top three winners in each division, plus hand-held Sudoku electronic games donated by G.S. Schwartz and Company to be given to the top ten winners. All those who correctly solve each puzzle will receive bonus points for each minute they finish early; winners will be those with the highest score. No credit will be given for incorrect puzzles. |
Second Annual Crossword Tournament |
Here’s another chance to match wits with some of the best-known constructors for The New York Times, Penny Press/Dell Magazines and Newsday crossword puzzles. |
All contestants will tackle five puzzles specially created for this tournament and edited by famed wordsmith Nancy Schuster. They will be judged on speed and accuracy. Solving time limits will vary depending on each puzzle's size. When all five puzzles have been completed and scored, the top three finalists from each division will tackle a sixth championship puzzle in front of all other contestants. All pre-registered contestants will receive a crossword book donated by St. Martin’s Press. |
Division A: Those who have placed in the top 30th percentile in any crossword tournament |
Division B: Everyone else |
Winners will share $500 in prize money, and will each receive a trophy. Trophies and books will also be awarded to the top contestants in the Rookie division, top contestants from several geographic regions, age groups (including juniors under 21, 50’s, 60’s, and Senior Citizens 70+), plus "the coveted Handwriting Award."
